Session 46 - Payday!

The adventurers explore a forgotten corner of the third level and find the wealth of the healers.

This write up is from Kay's notes from our December 26, 2024 session. Since our group is scattered around the country, we used Discord for our voice communication and Roll20 for our virtual tabletop. Thanks to Kay and JoJo for the screen shots.

Continued from: Overwhelmed

Date: May 26, 3517

Location:
Inside the Mouth of Doom, level 2

5:10 PM
We left the dungeon with no problems and arrived back at Castle Calaelen just after sunset. It was a clear and warm evening. We talked about what we learned this time. We learned a few more things about the Fountain of Pestilence toxic pool. It spawns things, some are demons, some are zombies, and lots of rats; it has two avenues of attack. We need a plan of attack if we are going to go back there.

6 AM
Waking up and having breakfast at the castle as the sun rose.

Afterwards, we headed back to the Mouth of Doom.

10 AM
We arrived on level 3 at the octagonal room with the murals of five men in flowing robes, where the fifth man has black paint over his left hand. We opened the door in the north wall and the bottled-up stench reeked, billowing out of the room. In the center of the room was a puddle of putrescence. We put on our leather gloves, and scarves around our faces, to keep out most of the foulness. Blaze went through the door first and then came out again right away.

As an experiment, Artie threw a fire bolt into the pool, to see if it would ignite. It sizzled out. Then Blaze threw a torch into it; it went out. Artie then went to the east wall where there was a closed door; checked for traps; there were none and it was unlocked. Blaze went up to open the door, and Artie positioned himself across the room on the far side of the toxic pool, bow out and ready to shoot. Blaze listened at the door but heard nothing. She opened the door and saw three giant rats and a demon.

Elron stepped up, shot a sling stone at the second rat and killed it, and his second shot killed the first rat. A fourth rat leaped out of hiding from behind the door into the doorway to bite Blaze, but missed.

Artie and Breena held their actions, waiting for a clear shot, not wanting to shoot Blaze.

Sinis cast acid splash on Rat 4 and hit it. It squealed but didn’t die.

The demon teleported in behind Blaze, facing her. Artie and Breena, who were holding for clear shots, now had one at the demon from behind. Breena shot her crossbow, but the bolt bounced off the demon’s warty hide. Artie’s fire bolt burned it; the demon was vulnerable to fire. The demon bit Blaze from behind. Giant rat 4 moved up to bite her. Blaze disengaged and moved next to Breena, out of the way.

Elron looked at the eyes of the demon and saw they were not gemstones like the others, just normal eyes. He missed the demon with his sling, but accidently hit Breena, who was standing behind him. Giant rat 3 tried to bite Elron, but missed. Artie cast a fire bolt at it for damage. Breena shot the rat and killed it.

Sinis cast witch bolt on the demon for some damage. The demon leapt to Sinis and bit him, with the painful wound becoming instantly infected.

Rat 4 came through the door, and bit Elron. Blaze cast flaming sphere and hit the demon with it, who was burned to death by the impact.

Elron hit and killed the rat that had bitten him, ending the fight.

Blaze looked into the next room and saw decaying furniture and a treasure chest, showing signs that it had been pried open with a crow bar, with the lid ajar.

A quick count tallied:

20,360 cp,

10,349 sp,

2,000 gp;

4 pearls worth 100 gp each,

and a golden wand encrusted with pearls worth 2,000 gp.

While we were counting, Parahelia cast lesser restoration on Sinis and cured his infection. We checked for secret doors as well, but found none. We figured that it would take two strong people to carry the treasure chest out with the loot.

Artie and Sinis had stayed back in the octagonal room with the murals of 5 men in white robes. The last man in line had a blacked out left hand. They were discussing why only him and not the others when they heard distant squeals and thumping feet coming from west, and warned the rest of us.

Breena cast mage armor on herself and moved toward the octagonal room.

Blaze went to the center of the octagonal room and held her position there until she could see something coming down the hallway from the west. She told the others to move into the empty room to the east, as it’s safer than staying in the toxic pool room. Elron grabbed the wand and ran out, and the group left the chest where they found it.

Everyone moved through the mural room and into the room to the east while Blaze held a rear-guard position.

Blaze finally saw a giant rat coming toward her from the west hallway. She cast flaming sphere and killed the huge rodent, and then she moved back into the east room, clearing the doorway.

Elron shot through the doorway and hit a second giant rat as it came into view.

The rats moved closer, illuminated by the flaming sphere. We counted 18 of them. Breena stepped out into the doorway and cast witch bolt, which missed.  A rat moved toward the door ten feet away; Breena shot it and killed it. Blaze cast acid splash on another rat, but missed. Elron shot two rats dead, one after the other with his sling. Sinis cast acid splash but missed. Two more rats got to the door; Breen cast thunderwave on them and killed both. Artie shot and killed another one. Blaze moved her flaming sphere into one rat, killed it, and attacked the next one; both rats were retreating west, away from us.

Elron’s sling took out another one as it ran. The rest got away.

We went back for the treasure chest and checked the room. We found no secret doors and decided to leave with our loot.

We got back to the level 1 entrance in 20 minutes. Once outside we headed to the castle.

1 PM
Back at Castle Calaelen, Sinis checked all our loot, no magic items this time. We’ll keep the wand until we can sell it in a different town. We don’t want the people in Zelcor’s Ferry knowing too much about our money, especially the deputy’s gang and other bandits. But we’ll still be coming into town to exchange coins for gems. Now Elron can pay for his new armor. We discussed buying treasure chests for ourselves, now that we have something to put in them.

Someone noticed that it’s our one-month anniversary of taking over the castle; time flies. We celebrated with a big payday.

So each person got 600 gp and 1,339 sp.

Elron retained the 23,875 cp for group expenses and paying the staff.

Elron kept a pearl for himself, so he has one pearl and 500 gp.

Artie asked if the giant raven would take a pearl, as payment of a gem/month for her services for the next month.
