Session 77 - Going Back Again

The adventurers return to Rappan Athuk, fighting ogres and goblins on the way.

This write-up is based on Kay’s notes from our March 4, 2026 session. Since our group is scattered around the country, we use Discord for our voice communication and Roll20 for our virtual tabletop. Thanks to Kay for the write-up and screen shots.

Location: Zelcor’s Ferry, Eastreach Provence
Date: July 9, 3517
 

10 AM
We were at Bristleback’s Inn, waiting while the party buys and sells, getting rumors, or not as it were. Artie bought 40 arrows for his short bow; Blaze and Breena exchanged their coins for gemstones; Blaze got another healing kit. 

Noon
It was hot, muggy, and cloudy, and we started back to the castle with our purchases. Arrived at the castle around 3 PM and Blaze put her gemstones into the chest in the library, then worked on updating her maps of the dungeon. We left the cart with the plate armor back at the coffin room, so we’ll have to return there. 

July 10 
6AM
The party left the castle for the Mouth of Doom.

9 AM
Arrived at the Mouth of Doom, it took 20 minutes to get down to the Fountain of Pestilence; we had no encounters on the way. 

At the Fountain of Pestilence, Blaze told the party she had updated her maps and noticed that there was a tunnel at the Fountain we never went down. Today the liquid had dried up and there were cockroaches everywhere, but they left us alone. Blaze went down the tunnel and discovered it dead ends around a curve.

2:30 PM
We arrived at the Last One Inn, and then continued to the Weird Plantation which took another 7.5 hours. But at around 6.5 hours in, we discovered two ogres going east. Elron saw them first and signaled to us. He wanted to kill them and readied his sling and warhammer. All three sling stones missed. 

Ogre 2 said, in giant, “They’re throwing rocks at us!”

Ogre 2 ran toward us and yelled something in giant. Breena’s magic missiles hit. Parahelia tried her crossbow, but it went wild, barely missing Elron and hitting the ceiling. Ogre 1 charged into Blaze’s lightning bolt; although he dodged, he still got scorched. Artie’s fire bolt missed. Rocky went to Breena. Two of Elron’s sling stones hit the ogre and then he moved back. Sinis cast acid splash on Ogre 1, and it splashed over to Ogre 2 as well.

Ogre 2 ran away. Breena, Rocky, Parahelia, Blaze and Artie all couldn’t act in time. Elron pulled his longbow, moved forward and shot Ogre 1 twice. Ogre 2 ran away; only Elron could keep up with them, firing his longbow as he ran.

He eventually caught up with the dead ogre, that had half a dozen arrows in its back.

Loot from bodies: 11 gp, 12 sp, a bag of turnips and a shark’s tooth.

As we started walking, someone asked, “how would an ogre get a shark’s tooth?”

“Maybe they killed someone that had one,” someone in the back replied. 

We kept going to the Weird Plantation.

10 PM
We arrived at the upper level of the Weird Plantation. We could hear goblins ahead and below us on the lower level, about seven of them. They were harvesting food and eating.

                   

They didn’t know we’re there until one goblin said, “I think I hear something, go check it out.”

Artie moved to the edge of the upper ledge to get a line of sight. Blaze positioned herself at the corner of the wall and waited. Goblins 8 and 4 moved toward the ramp to the upper level. Elron moved forward until he could now see all the goblins. He shot goblin 7 and killed it. 

A goblin from below yelled, “We’re under attack. I thought I saw a light up there.”

Elron targeted goblin 6 but missed both shots. Goblins 5, 1 and 3 ran away down the ramp. The goblin leader moved up the ramp toward our group. Goblins 6 and 2 ran away. Goblin 10 moved to join the leader up the ramp. Goblin 8 came up the ramp, and Artie cast fire bolt, but missed.

Breena cast magic missiles and one goblin went down under the barrage.

Goblins 4 and 9 went up the ramp. Parahelia moved down with her crossbow and readied to fire. Breena shot magic missiles at goblin 9, killing him. Blaze moved forward and waited for the goblins to line up for a lightning bolt.

Elron moved to the ramp, used a longbow on the leader; both arrows missed. Sinis cast acid splash on the leader, burning him. 

Goblins 5, 1, and 3 moved up the ramp toward the leader. Blaze lined up the leader with goblins 3 and 5 and cast lightning bolt; they all took damage and goblins 3 and 5 died.

The leader who looked singed, yelled, “Run away,” in Goblin and shot a crossbow bolt at Blaze but missed as he stepped back. Goblins 6, 2, and 10 ran away. Parahelia shot a crossbow bolt at the leader but missed. Goblin 4 ran. Breena aimed at the leader with magic missiles and he was looking bad, this goblin was tough.

Blaze cast acid splash on leader and he was unable to dodge. Elron’s shot at the leader with his longbow twice. The first arrow missed, the second hit the center of his chest, killing him.

Sinis cast acid splash and hit goblin 1. Six goblins were dead, the rest ran away.

We looted the bodies.

Loot: 11 gp, 29 sp, 13 cp, bag of salt, empty vial, and a piece of coal.

We ate some of the vegetables here, conserving our rations, and went into the blue flower room.

It’s an egg-shaped dome with glowing blue flowers, and an eerie humming noise; there’s moss on the walls. There were two flowers growing at the bottom, and others at 20 ft, 30 ft, and 40 ft higher on the walls. They were oddly spaced at exactly 10 foot intervals. Blaze cut a flower and it still glowed. It casts a bright light for 20 ft and a dim light for another 20 feet. She put it into her sack.

Elron picked the other one at the bottom. Rocky climbed up 20 ft and bit one off and brought it down to Breena. The source of the humming did not seem be the flowers.

10 PM
We stayed in the south tunnel between the dome room and an east/west hallway for a long rest. 

July 11
5 AM
We got up and headed the Gates of Gloom.  

10 AM
We arrived at the Gates of Gloom; it’s another 7 hours to the Ogres Cave.

No one had repaired the gap in the bars from our previous trip. The bodies of the dead cultists were gone. 

5 PM
We got to the Ogres Cave, and went down tunnel stairs into the cave. Blaze cautiously moved up to the cave entrance and looked out.

Elron had a feeling of fear; Blaze and Rocky didn’t feel it. Parahelia felt fear but overcame it. She explained that it was coming from a hallow spell, probably cast on the area by the Orcus cultists.
