Session 45 - Overwhelmed

The adventurers continue their battle at Fountain of Pestilence and need to retreat as they get overwhelmed.

This write up is based on my memory of our December 11, 2024 session. (Our Scribe, Kay could not make that session). Since our group is scattered around the country, we used Discord for our voice communication and Roll20 for our virtual tabletop. Thanks to JoJo for the screen shot and Kay for the proofreading.

Date: May 26, 3517

Location: The Fountain of Pestilence

The huge room reeked with the smell of rot and disease, an overwhelming miasma that rose from a huge central pool of pus and filth. At the middle of the pool, the horrid liquid fountains upward to a height of 5 feet. Five large rivulets of the fluid trickle away from the fountain, threading their way across the floor to disappear down corridors or through gaps in the walls.

The room itself was obviously once used as a temple: a huge alcove in the northern part of the room contains a 10-foot-tall statue of a benevolent-looking figure wearing white-painted robes. However, the statue was splashed with blood and filth, and a grisly necklace made of human hands had been draped around the statue’s neck like some sort of psychopathic offering. These were all left hands.

5 PM
Two more eggs bobbled to the surface and Elron reminded us that we wanted the demons’ eyes, so we should wait until they hatched next time.  He said, “We should damage them as much as we can, without killing them, let them get on the hard surface and take them out there.”

Everyone used light attacks to hurt the eggs, to avoid splitting them open and causing them to sink back into the pestilence.  It turns out that when they did hatch, the creature inside came out uninjured, so the attacks were wasted. Much to the party’s disappointment, these contained zombies instead of demons.

The first zombie went down before it could get halfway across the pool, exploding before its remains sunk into the slime.

As the second one waded across the pool, Elron shouted, “Let it get onto the hard surface before finishing it off so we can loot it.”

“I don’t want that stuff on me,” said Blaze as she slung a stone at the approaching zombie. It exploded, with fragments landing just short of her feet.

Breena shouted, “We have giant rats coming from the far tunnel!”

Her Gnomish eyes, which could see better than most in the dim light, had spotted a horde of Doberman-sized rats approaching down the passage on the east side of the room.

The party fell back into the library as three 6-foot-long centipedes crawled out of the pool. Blaze cast flaming sphere in the doorway which kept the rats from advancing.

As the party pulled back, they could hear splashing in the flooded tunnel between the rooms. “The rats were trying to get behind us!”

The party pulled back to the stairs, shooting rats when they started to climb out of the slime. Blaze closed the door and moved the flaming sphere to the base of the stairs.

As the party retreated up the stairs, two demons teleported into the room next to the flaming sphere. One went down quickly after everyone in range shot at it.  The other demon cast grease on the landing above Elron and Breena.

The second demon died shortly after and Blaze threw a rope to Breena and she and Elron got over the grease without tumbling down the stairs into the flaming sphere.

Someone said, “We got a head start, we should run to the top of the stairs.”

Blaze reminded everyone the sphere had about 15 seconds left and she couldn’t cast it again that day.

Everyone ran up the stairs.
