Session 47 - The Ghost and the Isolated Workroom
This write up is based on my memory of
our January 8,
2025 session. (Our Scribe, Kay could not make that session).
Since our group is
scattered around the country, we used Discord for our voice
communication and Roll20
for our virtual tabletop. Thanks to JoJo for the screen shot and
Kay for the
proofreading.

Midnight.
Elron and Bracks had
gone out to
the gate to relieve Breena and Cato when a sound like breaking
stone and chains
echoed through the castle.
Everyone else was awakened by the sound, followed by an awful stench that made Blaze throw up. Everyone covered their faces, but it did not seem to help.
Elron told Bracks to watch the gate in case
it was an
ambush, and ran for the front door with Breena and Cato.
Upstairs, Blaze ran for the stairs, followed by the rest. Sinis took the rear, having spent time to put on his robe; the others grabbed weapons, but were still in their bedclothes.
Once in the castle, Elron turned left after
spotting a
slight green glow in that direction.
He
ran toward its source and rounding a corner, came face to face
with the ghost
of the goblin leader, back after being killed on the first day the
party took
Castle Calaelen.
He wasted no time and slung a magic stone at it. It didn’t like that at all, and stepped through the door behind it, emerging a few seconds later between Breena and Elron. It tried to grab Elron with its chill touch, but he blocked it and hit it with another sling stone.
Breena then obliterated it with a flight of
magic missiles.
Instantly, the stench was gone.
The rest of the party caught up and Breena
and Elron
explained what they had seen. Everyone searched to see what had
made the sound,
but could find nothing, noting that the room that had the
uncleanable stench
now smelled only of damp stone and soap.
Everyone except Elron and Bracks went back to bed and tried to go back to sleep.
6:03
Sunrise
Over breakfast, the group decided to head into town and
get supplies. Blaze, not fully recovered from the night before,
decided to stay
at the castle and do some reading instead.
10 AM
In Zelcor’s Ferry, most of the party went shopping at
Rasmus’ or just hung out at the Bristleback Inn. Elron, who had left his armor
at the castle,
went to Big Morgan’s to see if his armor was ready. Fortunately,
it was.
Breena, who had been chatting with Odo about the latest rumors, learned that, “Deep in the dungeon lies a vast cavern with monsters of gigantic size.”
Soon after, Elron, wearing his shiny new
half-plate, put his
head through the open door and said, “Ready to go?”
Everyone quickly finished their drinks and headed for the Mouth of Doom.
As they were walking out the gate, Artie said,
“We really
should have some sort of plan before we get there.”
Everyone agreed and over the next two hours everyone discussed what they thought the best course of action should be.
By the time they were half way to the dungeon
entrance, they
had a plan involving a metal net thown over the lightning ball,
which Sinis was
pretty sure was an elemental of some sort.
So they turned around and went back to town.
2 PM
Back in town, Big Morgan explained that he didn’t have the
skill to make a metal net. He suggested they try Rasmus Pye’s
Trading Post.
It turns out Rasmus did have a metal net. It had hooks on it and was smaller than what we wanted, but would do. It was pricy, going for 20 gp.
6:30 PM
Back in the teleport room, everyone lined up behind Elron,
net in hand.
Upon arrival, Elron threw the metal net at the ball of lighning. It nimbly dodged out of the way, as the net landed on the floor behind it.
Breena
and Sinis
came through next and cast spells at it; it dimmed each time it
was hit.
It sent a lightning bolt at Elron, who only felt a mild shock as most of the bolt was absorbed by his shield.
He
replied with a
stone from his sling, which hit.
Breena finished it off with magic missiles as the rest of the party came through the teleport.
Artie
checked the
cabinets for traps as everyone else searched the room.
No one found any secret doors and we were disappointed not to find any spare change under the cushions of the old chair.
Artie did not find any traps, but the fourth
cabinet was
suspiciously solid. He wasn’t sure what to make of that and the
party decided
to open that one last.
Once checked, Artie got back and Elron
started opening
the cabinets.
Cabinet #1 contained 20 sheets of old parchment, several quill pens, bottles of now-solidified ink, 10 vials of very fine sand, and a rusty razor.
Sinis said, “They used the razor to sharpen the quills”.
Cabinet #2 contained 6 books:
- Amador’s Basic Anatomical Textbook
- Zovar’s Catalogue of Diseases and Pestilences
- Tharo’s Introduction to Purgatives and Herbal Remedies, second edition
- Polodor’s Collected Essays on Contagions and Cures
- Omens, Portents, and Prophesies of the Healing Gods
- A 6th book that did not seem to match the others
The
6th book had no title on the cover, and the thick leather binding
was held
closed with a massive lock.
Cabinet #3 contained a row of 20 bottles of liquid, of various
colors.
Cabinet
#5 contained 2 scrolls written on red parchment, and a locked,
leather-bound
book.
Checking the red scrolls found that they are scrolls of lesser
restoration.
Elron was especially careful when he opened the fourth cabinet. It was well that he did, because as soon as he flipped the latch, the doors burst open and a green slime flowed out. It would have been all over someone if they had been in front of it.
A
quick spell turned it into a smoking crisp.
At that point, the party decided to head back to Castle Calaelan.
10 PM
The
party made it back to the castle with no trouble on the way.
