Session 16: Rats Again and Kobolds

The party finds a temple to the Gods of Chance and encounter Giant Rats and Kobolds.

This is based on Kay's (Blaze's) notes from our November 1, 2023 session. The screen shots were taken by JoJo (Breena). Since our group is scattered around the country, we used
Discord for our voice communication and Roll20 for our virtual tabletop.

Continued from: Giant Leeches

Date: May 13th, 3517 I.R.
Location: At the Great Skeleton Statue, inside the Mouth of Doom

2:40 PM
We were in the room with the giant skeleton statue and giant leeches, all dead now. Artie checked for traps at the door in the north wall. He discovered that it was stuck but unlocked. We opened the door and found a small room with debris filling the north end. Lark and Elron stepped inside and got hit with rocks falling from the ceiling. Lark’s expertise in stonework said that it was too dangerous to stay, so we closed the door and moved to the door in the east wall.

Lark opened the door; it was not locked from this side.

There was a short hallway into a room with angled walls forming a diamond shape.  We entered the room on the western diamond point; across the room, the hallway continued on to the east; the north and south points of the room have short hallways that end in doors. The room was empty.

A pit trap opened nearly under Blaze’s feet as she walked toward the center of the room, fortunately
she detected it at the last minute – that’s what the quarterstaff is for. OK, the room was empty except for a pit trap. The pit was a 10-foot square and 20-feet deep. Looking down into it, there appeared to be an opening in the west side wall on the lower level.

Artie checked the doors for traps and found none, but they were locked. Artie unlocked the north door, and Lark opened it. The room was empty. Lark and Elron checked for secret doors. No one found any. Lark discovered a hollow space behind the east wall, but was unable to discover a secret door leading into it.

Skipping the south door, we continued onward along the eastern hallway. It turned north and we followed it to a ‘Y’ intersection. The tail of the Y goes north and the two arms (of which our hallway is the one on the east side) go south. At the end of the north hall was a double door.

In the meantime, Lark had gone exploring down the west arm hallway by himself; he followed it to the south end where it turned west for a short length and then turned north; following it up past a dogleg east and north, he saw a door on the west side of the hall and heard small motion sounds. He checked the door – it was locked.

Back at the north double door – it was locked as well. Artie unlocked it and stepped back. Elron opened the door and we find a room with alcoves with statues of idols. All the statues hold dice, cards, or gambling imagery.

Lark came back and told us about the door with the noises.

Examining the room, there were four statues each on the east and west walls.  Along the north wall were two statues at the east and west corners, and in the middle of the north wall was an altar with a large bowl in it. Behind it on the wall were three hand indentations where a person could place their right hand. Blaze and Sinis wracked their brains trying to identify the idols. They seemed to be luck or gambling idols, but they couldn’t remember the names.

Breena and Lark pressed their right hands to the indentations and a glowing rune appeared over each of their hands on the wall. Lark checked for a mechanism of some kind but found none. Beneddar cast mage hand on the third print.

Breena’s rune was a demon and Lark’s rune was a circle. No rune illuminated for the mage hand.

They tried again, but this time Beneddar placed his hand on the print. Three sword runes lit up on the wall and a sword appeared in the bowl.

Lark picked it up, and Lark could feel it trying to bind to him. It was a magic sword of some kind. Not wanting to deal with it at that time, he wrapped it up and put it into his pack.

Breena, Elron and Beneddar touched the prints. This time one was a circle, one was a skull and one was a demon, but nothing showed up in the bowl.

We decided to leave the altar of the gods of chance behind and continue on to the west hallway, to the door Lark had discovered earlier. Upon listening closely we could hear rats behind it, big ones. Elron opened the door, with Breena and Beneddar ready with sleep spells; yep, they were giant rats. Elron held his position at the door and waited for the sleep spells to work.

Beneddar cast sleep. As Elron stepped into the room, half the rats were asleep and five were still awake. Elron killed one that was sleeping with a single slice of his sword.

Blaze stepped into the room and cast flaming sphere and moved it into one awake rat, setting it on fire. Lark moved into the room and stabbed a sleeping rat. Breena cast sleep on the other rats still awake; two more went to sleep. Two rats charged Breena and one bit her, the other missed. The rat on fire stepped out of the flame and bit Lark, but only got a mouth full of steel armor.

The people still in the hallway heard kobolds coming down the hallway from the north; six of them, all using slings with rocks.

The first kobold used a slingshot and missed; the second kobold hit Beneddar with a rock. The third hit Sinis and injured him. Another kobold hit Beneddar for more damage. One hit Sinis with a rock. The last kobold hit Artie.

Sinis moved into the rat room and cast blur, hiding himself.

Beneddar backed into the hall and cast sleep on the kobolds. Elron moved out to the hallway and saw all six kobolds were asleep, and started executing them.

Blaze moved her flaming sphere into the burned rat again for more damage. Lark then attacked the flaming rat with his axe, but missed.

Artie joined Elron at the kobolds to finish them off.

Breena shot her crossbow at a rat and hit.  It squealed and attacked her again but missed. The second rat also missed her. The burning rat finally ran away and Blaze hit it with her quarterstaff and put it out of its misery.

Parahelia went after the last awake rat near Breena (it was bigger than Breena!) with her longsword but missed. Blaze moved the flame sphere to the last awake rat. Lark hit it.  Breena shot at the same rat, but missed. The rat moved out of the fire and bit Lark. Parahelia and Beneddar had tried to hit the rat before it got to Lark, but both missed. Parahelia chopped a sleeping rat and killed it.

Sinis cast acid splash, killing one rat, and it splashed over to another rat, but it was still alive. Beneddar shot a rat and finished it off.

At this point, all the rats and kobolds were dead. We killed a total of six kobolds and 10 giant rats.

Blaze healed Sinis, Breena, Lark and Beneddar.

4 PM
Elron looted the kobolds and found 4 pp, 11 gp, 12 sp, 52 cp, along with their slingshots and rocks, and 6 daggers. In the rat room, there was nesting material, scraps of cloth and feces, and one hole in the floor near the west wall. Beneddar used mage hand to dig through the material and found a dart trap that shot four darts; the first dart hit Breena for damage, one missed Beneddar; the other two darts hit the wall. He found another 20 gp, 100 sp, 231 cp, a silver necklace, a pewter fork, and a half-full bottle of liquid. Beneddar said he and Breena should be the ones to drink the liquid; Blaze opined they should have it identified first.

4:30 PM
We left the dungeon and sent Rocky out first and up a tree, to see If anyone was waiting for us.

We went back to the castle. We are low on supplies and Blaze is nearly out of healing kits. We will need to visit the village and restock before returning to the Mouth of Doom.
