Session 15: Giant Leeches

The party continues their exploration and finds themselves swarmed by giant leaches and learns that things may be attracted by the sound of combat.

This is based on Kay's (Blaze's) notes from our October 18, 2023 session. The screen shots were taken by JoJo (Breena). Since our group is scattered around the country, we used Discord for our voice communication and Roll20 for our virtual tabletop.

Continued from: Rats and a Temple of Green Flame.

Date: May 13th, 3517 I.R.
Location: The Chapel of Green Flame, inside the Mouth of Doom

10:20 AM

The air was stale, musty, and with a faint smell of rot. The secret closet-sized room, on the east wall of the Chapel, had another secret door on its east wall. Artie checked for traps but did not find any, but did discover that it was not locked. The door was 4 feet tall, hobbit-sized.

When Blaze pushed it open, a giant leech sprung out onto her, drawing blood. She quickly pulled it off and held the slimy, squirming thing in her hands away from her body.
Back in the main chapel, Lark was still studying the walls.  Hearing a ruckus, he headed up to see what was going on.

Brenna, standing near Blaze, stabbed at the leech with her blades, missing. Elron pulled Blaze out into the main room where everyone could get to it. Blaze threw the leech down to the floor and cast acid splash on it, but missed.

Beneddar cast Toll the Dead, but there was no effect on the leech. Artie cast fire bolt but missed. Sinis cast acid splash and missed; Breena shot her crossbow and hit it, pinning it to the floor.  Several other party members attacked, but no one was able to hit it. Finally, Beneddar cast Toll the Dead again and killed it.

The room past the four-foot-tall door also had a low 4-ft-tall ceiling and was another closet-sized room. There was a pillar in the center and a skeleton lying on the floor near the east wall. Breena and Artie had no problem walking into the room, but the others have to duck or crawl to move through it.

The skeleton was wearing chainmail, with a longsword and short bow with two arrows, and a pouch. The pouch had 15 gp and a jasper gemstone. Blaze found a secret door on the south wall – well, it had a latch on this side, but was secret on the other side.

Lark’s investigation of the main chapel walls determined the west wall was solid, and he also checked the braziers where Beneddar had found the green snake.

Back in the four-foot-tall room, Artie checked for traps around the latch and found none, it also was not locked.

Blaze unlatched the door and listened – no sound. She opened the door, and yeah, another giant leech right at the door. Elron stepped in and was attacked by the leech, hit, and he and Blaze both missed.

Blaze ran into the room, past the leech which hit her, and saw four more of them around the corner to the northeast.

This room had a 12-ft ceiling height, and a stairway leading down in the southeast corner of this room. The leech at the door tried to hit Blaze but missed. Blaze tried acid splash on the four leeches around the corner and missed; however, she hit two of them, hurting both.

From the doorway, Artie cast firebolt and missed. Brenna’s crossbow missed. Sinis cast witch bolt and hit.

Beneddar cast thunderwave on three leaches, and two were killed and one injured. Unfortunately, the sound of the thunderwave annoyed three more leeches that came up the stairs, attracted by the noise.

Blaze, hurt and finding herself between two groups of fast-moving leeches, ran to the northeast into an empty area of the room.

Elron moved in and attacked with his sword which slipped out of his hand, clanging on the floor.
The leeches went after Beneddar and Elron, who had moved into the room with Blaze.

Breena entered the room and cast thunderwave on the leeches on the stairs. She missed the first one, but the second one died and the third was hurt. Sinis used burning hands on two leeches, killing one and hurting the other.

Beneddar cast sleep on the leeches, and three stopped moving, apparently asleep.

Lark, who was still in the green flame temple, began moving toward the fighting.

Elron stabbed a sleeping leech with his sword and killed it. The one leech that was still awake after the sleep spell, attacked Breena and bit her.

Back in the chapel, four undead skeletons came into the room and moved toward Lark.

Lark closed the distance toward the skeletons while banging on his shield. Blaze cast witch bolt on a leech but missed.

Elron moved up to the leech attacking Breena, and attacked it from behind with his longsword, killing it.

The still living leeches moved towards easy targets. Artie opened the closet door he had closed earlier and yelled to Lark to come in and, “We’ll lock it out.”

Breena shot the leech attacking Beneddar.

Sinis stabbed a sleeping leech in front of Elron.

The skeletons moved up, and Artie cast fire bolt and missed. The first skeleton swung a short sword at Lark, hitting him. The second skeleton missed, and the third skeleton hit Lark, dealing a nasty wound.

Beneddar cast Toll the Dead on one skeleton and hit. Lark hit the first skeleton, but missed the second.

Blaze moved to put her back to the western wall facing the remaining leeches.

Elron shot the second skeleton in front of Lark, doing minor damage; the skeletons seemed to be resistant to arrows.

Parahelia walked over to Blaze and cast cure wounds which helped, as she had several injuries from the leeches.

Breen moved to the door of the first closet room, and seeing a skeleton next to Rocky, shot it with her crossbow and broke its arm.

Sinis checked the stairs in the southeast corner; they went down to a landing which turned left and went north. He started guarding the stairs in case more leeches or anything else came up.

The first skeleton attacked Elron and hit. The second skeleton attacked Lark, but missed and its rusty sword snapped off at the hilt. The third skeleton swung at Lark and missed. Lark hit one skeleton and it collapsed into a pile of loose bones and stopped moving.

Parahelia came back into the chapel and cast Turn Undead, and one skeleton was turned. Elron hit it in the back with his longsword and killed it.  One of the remaining skeletons hit Lark, and he used his riposte ability to kill it.

Beneddar swung his longsword at the last one and finished it off.

As Blaze had her back to the common wall with the 4-ft-tall room, she finally looked up, and up, and up…

“Oh, dragonfarts!” she exclaimed.

The four-foot-tall “room” was actually a hollow 5-ft-tall dais that the party passed through; upon the dais in the leech room was a ten-foot-tall skeleton statue with wolves. The room itself was a 65-ft by 40-ft rectangular room, oriented N-S, with a stairwell in the southeast corner going down. There were two doors, one in the north wall and one in the east wall; there was also a secret entrance on the south wall of the dais supporting the giant skeleton statue.

Some people were seriously injured at this point: Elron and Lark were hurt the worst, Blaze (even after healing by Parahelia), and Beneddar were also hurt. The party decided to stop here and rest/recuperate.

Blaze healed Elron, Lark, and herself with her healing kits – not up to full strength though, making a large dent in her supplies. Beneddar was able to heal himself completely by using a short rest, and used Song of Rest on all of us till those injured recovered completely.

2:40 PM
When everyone has healed and rested, we took stock. After all that, we killed nine giant leeches and four skeletons. All for a grand total of 15 gp and a jasper gemstone as loot.
