Session 68 - Green Guardian Gargoyles

The adventurers attack the gargoyles perched on the main mausoleum and find that only half responded, so they barricaded themselves inside one of the lesser mausoleums and recovered before taking on the rest.

This write-up is based on Kay’s notes from our October 15, 2025 session. Since our group is scattered around the country, we use Discord for our voice communication and Roll20 for our virtual tabletop. Thanks to Kay for the write-up and screen shots.

Date: Sunday, June 25, 3517

4 PM
We were in battle with the gargoyles at the eastern mausoleum. Four of the eight gargoyles that were guarding the southern mausoleum flew toward the east mausoleum where the party was holed up in a defensive position.

Gargoyle #6 flew toward the front door, straight at Blaze and attacked her with its horn, missed, tried to bite, missed, raked her with one claw, and missed with the other. Blaze disengaged and ran inside. Gargoyle #5 flew through the door, stopping in front of Parahelia. On the way in, Parahelia’s Spirit Guardians hit it for full damage.

Gargoyle 4 flew to the door but stopped short of the spirit guardians.

Elron’s sling stone hit Gargoyle #4 at the door three times, pummeling it and knocking chips of green stone off it, then Elron moved back.

Breena cast magic missiles on Gargoyles #4 and #5, shattering #5.

Artie hit Gargoyle #4 with a fire bolt and ducked behind the sarcophagus. 

Gargoyles #2, #7 and #8, still on the roof to the south, were cheering them on.

Sinis hit Gargoyle #4 with a witch bolt.

Gargoyle #3 moved toward the door. Gargoyle #1, on the roof, yelled “Go in!” 

Parahelia cast Spirit Hammer and waited for a target. Gargoyle #6 stepped through the door toward Parahelia and her spirit guardians attacked it, and then she swung at it with her longsword, missing.

Gargoyle #6 gored Parahelia with a horn, then tried to grapple with Elron but missed.

Blaze cast lightning bolt at Gargoyles #3 and #4, lighting them up. Gargoyle #4 entered the mausoleum and attacked Blaze but, distracted by the lightning, it was unable to hurt her. 

Elron aimed his sling at Gargoyle #6, but missed. Breena cast magic missiles at Gargoyle #3 and Gargoyle #4, hitting both as Gargoyle 8, on the roof, laughed.

Artie’s crossbow bolt hit Gargoyle #4 and we heard a loud cracking sound with a large chip flying off it.

Sinis’s witch bolt continued hitting Gargoyle #4, shattering it. 

Gargoyle #3 came through the door and attacked Blaze but missed with its horn, bite, and claw attacks, and then it tripped and fell from the uneven flooring.

Parahelia disengaged, used her spirit hammer on Gargoyle #3 and shattered it. 

Gargoyle #6 attacked Elron with its horn, bite, and one claw, missed on all of them, but one claw swipe hit.

Blaze cast witch bolt on Gargoyle #6 and hit, then Elron’s sling stone hit it from the other side.

Artie yelled to Elron to move to the right so he’d have a clear shot. 

Breena moved and cast witch bolt on Gargoyle #6, then Artie hit it with an arrow.

This whole time Rocky stayed at his position and watched, there was not much a squirrel could do.

Sinis cast acid splash at Gargoyle #6, but missed. Parahelia used spirit hammer on it and then moved to Blaze and healed everyone back up to normal or nearly so. Her spirit guardians continued eroding Gargoyle #6. 

Gargoyle 6 then attacked Breena, trying to grab her and fly off. Breena wriggled out of its grasp, but was injured in the process.

Blaze’s witch bolt continued to crackle around gargoyle 6, and it shattered into a spray of gravel. 

Elron could see through the door to the roof of the south mausoleum, and saw the four gargoyles on it cheering and laughing, some handing coins over to the other gargoyles; apparently there was betting going on.

Between Parahelia and Blaze, Breena was healed to full health once more.

Elron started picking through the rubble piles of the gargoyles and got 8 horns (250 gp/each) and 8 obsidian eyes (500 gp/each) worth around 6,000 gp. 

The group discussed how to attack the four remaining gargoyles. They are now staring straight ahead and looking like statues once more. Although Elron wanted us to attack the other four now, Blaze pointed out how much magic we had had to use on the first four, and we didn’t have the spells to do it again before recovering.

We decided to take a long rest inside the mausoleum. Elron created 5 goodberries and Artie took rations. The doors’ locks were broken, so we used the lids of the sarcophagi to brace against the doors. At 80 lbs. each, they held through the rest of the day and night. We inspected the interior for hidden tunnels. Breena, Blaze, and Elron took pieces of the gargoyles; Elron planned to use his for paying the giant raven. 

4:30 PM
We set up camp.

5 PM
Breena and Blaze stood first watch at the front door, while Elron was watching inside the room. Breena, looking through the keyhole, saw a shadow on the stairs and a sound of something coming down. She counted seven ghouls. They tried to force the door open but failed. They scooped up the gargoyle remains outside and put them in a bag, then went on their way.  

8:30 PM
Sunset

10 PM

Started a long rest. The outside temperature finally cooled down into the 70’s, but it was still hot inside the mausoleum. 

June 26

4 AM
Total silence outside, the temperature is around 74F and cloudy. 

6 AM
Sunrise, temperature at 73F, cloudy, the air was still with a faint smell of decay.

We opened the door and as expected, the pile of gargoyle gravel was gone. Elron went outside to check on the other 4 gargoyles and saw them on the south mausoleum roof. Breena cast mage armor, which lasts for 8 hours. We discussed the strategy of attacking the four roof gargoyles.
