Session 50: Tavern Level 4
This write up is
based on Kay’s notes
from our February 19, 2025 session. Since our group is
scattered around the
country, we used Discord for our voice communication and
Roll20 for our virtual
tabletop. Thanks to Kay for the proofreading and screen shots.

4:30 PM
We were on Level 2, in the giant stone face room where we got
some
much-needed experience.
7:30 PM
3 hours back to the castle. Blaze dropped off her new treasure
chest in the
library after putting her gems in it, and spent time there
updating her maps.
Elron ate dinner, and then climbed up the cliff face to inspect
the stone
structure he had been building.

6 AM
Breakfast, and then 3 hours to the Mouth of Doom. Luckily, we had
no encounters
going down to the stairs to the 3rd level, and going
down to a 4th
level for the first time. At the bottom of the stairs, there was a
room with a
15-ft ceiling. On the north wall Blaze saw an inscription, “Thou
art entering
the Hospices of the healers, do so with no hostile intent and thou
art
welcome.”
Elron spotted a large hole blasted into the
floor. It was
shallow and filled with broken tiles and there was no evidence of
what had
caused it.

On the east and west walls were sets of double doors. On the
south wall was writing in Goblin script that Blaze could read as,
“Anyone
letting horses piss on the floor in here will be flogged to
Death.”
Elron checked the west door across from it. He could find no traps but he could hear an occasional thumping sound, like a book dropping to the floor or horses’ hooves. Artie didn’t hear anything when he checked it. Elron got his sling ready and opened the eastern door; there was a long hallway with a 15-ft ceiling to the east. We walked down the hallway about 200 ft and decided to come back; there were no doors or other hallways that we encountered along the walk.
Back at the western doors, Elron opened one and found a pair of
dead
horses. They were standing
up and one
moved; Elron closed the door. He then began looking for secret
doors on the
south wall. The zombie horses didn’t really react to us.
We decided to go back down the eastern hallway further to see what we could find. We walked for three miles without finding anything except faint cartwheel marks on the floor.
12:30
PM
We had travelled about 11 miles down the eastern hallway and
finally saw
something in the distance. We found a painted sign on the north
side of the
tunnel. There was a place where the wall was slathered over with a
thick layer
of what must once have been brightly-colored paint. The lurid
colors are now
faded, but the sign was still visible, showing a bat-winged
succubus holding a
sign that reads “The Last One Inn.” To the east, the corridor
ended at a
T-junction, dividing into corridors leading to the north and to
the south.
Elron went north and found a 2-seat privy, really stinking on the
left/west
side of the hall. The corridor turned to the east past the privy
and we found a
door on the south wall. Elron went past the door and found a 4-5
ft hole in the
floor. We went further down the hallway, but came back when it
turned to the
northeast.
While Artie was checking out the door, Elron and the others went back down the corridor to the south and found another eastern hallway with a door on the north side of the hall. There was also a short alcove next to it. The south hallway continued on past this T-junction and we followed it to the end, where it turned to the east for a short distance, ending in a horse stable. We all went back to the northern end to where Artie was working on the door.
It wasn’t locked, but Artie could hear a clanking sound. The double door was made of heavy iron-bound oak, and looked like it had been opened recently. Elron opened it and saw the inside of a tavern, glasses on the bar; behind the bar was a large roach the size of a short human, who said, “Welcome to The Last One Inn.”
Elron entered and asked where the door on the
east wall went
to. The roach-man said, “those are rooms for rent. Hobbit-sized
rooms are 10 gp
per night, human-sized rooms are 50 gp/night. Iron rations are 2
gp, drinks are
1 gp, and sausages are 1 sp.”
Elron asked to see the rooms, and the roach, whose name was Urovok, scuttled across the room to show him. The first room on the north side was human-sized and had a fireplace but no chimney, with a totem pole in the northwest corner. The roach-man admitted the fire was magic. The second room was also human-sized. The three rooms on the south side of the hallway were hobbit-sized.
We chatted with him and he told us the
southeast tunnel went
to a plantation and eventually came out at the mausoleum.
The northeast tunnel went to the caverns; there’s a room with a
statue. The
plantation is 15 miles ahead and some travelers use it to grow
food; the
caverns are 18 miles ahead. Both tunnels eventually go to the main
dungeon.
Sometimes goblins come through here, sometimes cultists in their
red robes. (We
met one before).
12:40 PM
The party left the tavern and went back to the zombie horse
stables. The
hallway looked like there has not been much traffic in a long
time. Elron approached
one of the zombie horses to see how it would react; both of the
horses let him
pet them. There were no saddles but there were hooks where saddles
would have
been.
4:30 PM
We left the dungeon for the castle. Going past the Fountain of
Pestilence, it
looked like the slime is still going down, and there is no sign of
the hand
necklace. Nothing seems to be spawning there now.
We got back to the castle after dark around 7:20pm, with no
encounters on the
way. Blaze updated her maps for the new level 4.
One of the new books we found had descriptions for 40-50 types of demons, 5 of which were demons of pestilence. We wanted to copy the info in it to take with us into the dungeon. Some of our people at the castle can read and write. Cato Ziani, the cleric, can copy the book for 15 gp. Elron wanted the cleric to copy the book in 2 weeks, or to direct some of the others to do so.
May 31
9 AM
We went into town for parchment and ink for copying the book
on demons. We
ended up at Rasmus Pye’s Trading Post. We bought enough parchment
sheets and
bottles of ink for a 200 page book. We asked the necromancer how
much he’d pay
for the book on demons = 1,200 gp for a good copy.
12 PM
We took lunch at the inn and tried to find rumors, but struck out
on getting any
new information.
1 PM
Headed back to the castle. We got the cleric to copy the book for
15 gp and 1%
of whatever we get for selling it to the necromancer. We spent 70
gp on
materials for writing it.
