Session 27: Gnolls, Zombies and a Trap
This write up is from Kay's notes from our April 3rd, 2024
session. Since
our group is scattered around the country, we used Discord for
our voice
communication and Roll20
for
our virtual tabletop.

We were still in combat.
Artie, in the hallway guarding our rear at the southern end, aimed
his short
bow at one of the gnolls attacking Elron and missed. Sinis cast acid
splash
on the gnoll on his right in the hallway; it hit his target,
killing it, and
splashed a second gnoll. Breena pulled back away from the oncoming
gnolls.
Elron cast ensnaring strike on the left gnoll, but missed
it when he
swung with his longword. Parahelia
cast shield
of faith around Breena to protect her; then she cast spiritual
hammer
on the gnoll in front of her, hitting it.
Back in the main room, Lark hit the gnoll in front of him on his left. Beneddar cast Toll the Dead on Lark’s target and killed it. Blaze cast witch bolt on the gnoll that was intimidated by her and he lit up; then he started moving around the melee to the north away from Blaze and got next to Lark, attacking him with a short sword, but missed. The second gnoll attacked Parahelia but missed; the third gnoll attacked Beneddar, trying to bite him but missed, and the gnoll’s sword also missed with a wild swing.
In the hall, the first gnoll attacked Elron
with a short
sword and hit; the second gnoll attacked Elron but missed.
To the north at the bend in the hallway, four zombies, attracted
by the sound
of battle, came around the corner.
Artie and Breena shot at a gnoll but both missed.
Elron used ensnaring strike with his longsword on the gnoll to his left for major damage.
Sinis had cast blur and now moved
forward with a witch
bolt on the right gnoll, but missed and tripped over
something, probably a loose
bone, and regained his balance.
Lark attacked the gnoll in front of him, killing it. Beneddar
attacked a gnoll
with his sword for minor damage. Parahelia attacked the gnoll in
front of her
with her longsword and then hit with her spiritual hammer,
killing it.
Blaze cast witch bolt on the gnoll in front of Beneddar,
killing it. With
that, the fight in the main room was over, with six gnolls and two
hyenas dead;
we’re all still alive. Parahelia came over to Blaze; Blaze moved
to the east
door in the room, checked that it was locked, and listened at the
door, hearing
nothing but echoes of combat in the hall.
Back in the hallway, two gnolls both swung
their swords at
Elron and both missed.
The four zombies were advancing from the north; Artie shot and
missed again.
Sinis tried to acid splash two gnolls, but missed. Lark,
deprived of
live targets in the room, moved into the hallway. Beneddar joined
him and cast Toll
the Dead on one gnoll, killing it. Elron hit a gnoll with
his longsword,
killing it.
The four zombies continued advancing from the north, and Artie
shot one for
major damage. Lark stepped up to the zombies, and one of the
zombies swung at
him with its fist. Beneddar cast Toll the Dead for damage
on one zombie.
Elron attacked two with his longsword, and killed one.
Back in the room, Parahelia moved toward the east door; Blaze moved into the hallway.
One zombie attacked Elron, but its arm broke off when he blocked it with his shield. Artie shot the now one-armed zombie for major damage. Sinis cast acid splash on two zombies for minor damage on each. Lark hit the one-armed zombie in front of him for major damage. Beneddar cast Toll the dead on the other zombie, leaving it badly damaged. Elron attacked the two-armed zombie in front of him and missed. Parahelia used spiritual hammer. Blaze hit the one-armed zombie, killing it.
Artie went back to guarding the rear at the south end of the hall with Breena. Sinis moved up and attacked the zombie next to Elron with acid splash, it’s damaged but doesn’t go down. Lark stepped over one dead zombie and hit the other one still standing; broke some ribs but it was still moving. Beneddar cast Toll the Dead on the last zombie but did no damage. Elron hit it with his longword and finally killed it.
Final tallies:
· 4 zombies
· 12 gnolls
· 2 hyenas
Loot from the gnolls: 12 long bows, 12 short swords, 112 arrows, armor scraps, and 71 gold pieces.
Lark started removing the locking mechanism on the doors for sale.
Blaze healed Elron and Breena (healed Lark also since we’ve been here). Elron gave himself and Beneddar one goodberry apiece for additional healing.
Lark and Parahelia went back into the room, and opened the southeast door. Parahelia found a loose flagstone and told Lark and Beneddar. There’s a barrel of water that Lark shifted but found nothing under it. Working up the flagstone, Lark found a wooden box underneath, four by eight inches. Artie checked it for traps. Lark put the box on the floor and Beneddar opened it with mage hand and we found five sapphires worth about 100 gp each.
Artie checked for traps on the north east door
and then unlocked
it as Lark was trying to remove the lock on the southeast door.
Artie found no
traps and said, “it’s quiet on the other side.”
The door was swollen but Beneddar was able to open it. There was a
scrawled
message on the wall:
Dam it is alive. Have to sleep, or die.
Elron looked into the room and nothing was
there that he
could see. He then went back to searching the main room; there are
bones on the
floor, ashes from a campfire on the floor, and a ventilation grill
in the wall
on the north end of the east wall.
1PM
We left the gnolls lair and traveled north along the hallway,
past the bend
to the east, to a door on the south side of the hall; there is a
corresponding
door on the north side across from it. The south door was standing
open, the
north door was closed.
We entered the south room and saw two doors on the east wall.
Blaze opened the
northern east door, it was not locked; there are dead giant ants,
maybe three.
They had been butchered and there was a strong smell of decay. We
closed the
door quickly.
On the southern end of the west wall, Beneddar noticed a metal
grate with a
hinge, a ventilation grill like the one in the other room,
possibly connected
to it. Beneddar opened it with mage hand, and saw
blackness. He’s an elf;
he should be able to see into the next room even without light.
There’s a water barrel next to the south wall.
Artie checked
the southern door on the east wall. No trap detected and the door
was locked. He
picked the lock with mage hand. Beneddar cast mage
hand and tried to
open it, but it wouldn’t
open; it was stuck. Elron used his strength to force it open, but
failed. Blaze
couldn’t open it either.
Beneddar pushed hard and it opened with the sound of grinding
metal. One thing
keeping it closed was a rusty dart trap. The dart shot out and
struck him
before he could dodge it. The dart was poisoned and he instantly
felt ill and
weak.
Inside was a 35-ft-long, 10-ft-wide corridor, with three doors on
the south
side of the hallway. Parahelia
healed
the poison, while Blaze healed the injury. Artie relocked the door
and made
sure the trap was disabled. Artie also analyzed the dart trap so
he can
identify it again if he came across another one like it.
While the others were attending to Beneddar, Elron finished
searching the room
and had found a bedroll with 300 gp sewn into it.
Sinis suggested we go into town directly from
here to look
for someone to help Beneddar get his constitution back. We used
the rope we had
left to climb back up the stairs/ramp; got back to the entrance
without encounters,
and checked the entrance for signs of ambushes before going
towards town.
3 PM
Going straight to town, we got as far as the ford when we saw some
figures on
horseback ahead of us.
